The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) has concluded its investigation into Jumia's terms and conditions and has ruled that the company can no longer evade responsibility for third-party goods sold on its platform. The investigation began in September 2021.
Western Union and MFS Africa have partnered to allow cross-border mobile money transfers in Africa. The collaboration will allow funds to be transferred from various countries to mobile wallets across the African continent.
SafiriSalama.com, a Kenyan funeraltech startup, is digitizing the end-of-life industry in the country with two products, Death Notices, and Memorials. Death Notices allows users to create affordable digital death announcements that can be shared across social media platforms. Meanwhile, Memorials provide a subscription service to manage a loved one's funeral process, preserve memories and enable discovery through search engines. SafiriSalama.com also developed The Redbook, an online directory connecting verified funeral service providers with bereaved families.
The Supreme Court of Nigeria has ruled that the old ₦200, ₦500, and ₦1000 notes are still legal tender and should remain in circulation until December 2023. The court also nullified the Naira redesign policy and declared it unconstitutional. The Central Bank of Nigeria had planned to demonetize the higher denominations of Naira notes, starting in January 2023, but this has been halted until December 2023 due to the court ruling. The demonetization was intended to reduce the amount of cash outside the vaults of commercial banks, curb counterfeiting, and enable the adoption of the CBN's cashless policy while reducing crime rates.
Moove drivers in Lagos are protesting over their working conditions, including having to work 12-hour days and remit $20 daily to Moove, as well as pay commissions to Uber. Moove rents out Suzuki Alto and S-Presso vehicles to drivers in a hire purchase model, with drivers becoming owners of the vehicles after paying Moove's determined value. Drivers have expressed frustration over the conditions, with one driver saying that after paying remittances and fuel costs, he is left with no income. Moove has responded by saying it is sympathetic to the challenges drivers face and offers various benefits, including insurance and repairs.
