The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had planned to demonetize higher Naira denominations (₦200, ₦500, and ₦1000) starting on January 31, 2023, but due to a shortage of new notes, the deadline was extended to February 10, 2023. The demonetization aimed to reduce the hoarding of banknotes by the public and increase the circulation of money within the economy. The CBN's efforts were supported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), but due to disruptions in trade and payments caused by the shortage of new banknotes, the IMF encouraged the CBN to consider extending the deadline if problems persisted.
However, on February 9, 2023, the Supreme Court temporarily suspended the enforcement of the February 10 Naira swap deadline due to a lawsuit filed by three APC governors from northern Nigeria—Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara. The hearing of the lawsuit has been adjourned to February 15. This temporary halt will give the parties involved time to present their arguments and reach a resolution.
