Google has announced that it is bringing AI-powered features to Google Workspace. The new features will include a language translation tool, smart compose for Google Chat and grammar suggestions in Google Docs. With these tools, users will be able to write and communicate more effectively and efficiently.
OnePipe, an embedded finance startup, has laid off around 20% of its workforce, with at least ten employees let go. CEO Ope Adeoye confirmed the layoffs and cited macroeconomic factors as the reason for the job losses. The company will focus on specific initiatives and cut back on experimental projects and will seek to secure another round of equity financing. OnePipe's inventory finance proposition is one of its fastest-growing products.
Nigeria has launched a $672 million fund, called The Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (i-DICE), to support the tech and creative sectors for individuals between 18 and 35 years old. The fund will invest in 200 tech and creative startups, as well as 450 tech-powered SMEs.
FairMoney, a Nigerian credit-led digital banking platform, has acquired PayForce, a merchant payment services provider that serves small businesses, in a cash-and-stock deal reportedly worth $15 million to $20 million. PayForce, a sub-brand of YC-backed CrowdForce, offers agency banking services, which extend financial services to the last mile via a network of human ATMs. As part of the deal, CrowdForce CEO Oluwatomi Ayorinde will head FairMoney's payments business unit, PayForce by FairMoney. FairMoney started with a digital lending product but has now evolved to provide debit accounts and cards, P2P transfers, and payments to over a million retail customers and small businesses. The acquisition will help FairMoney broaden its financial services proposition to merchants.
Naspers, Africa’s largest tech company by market capitalization, has shut down its South Africa-focused venture capital fund, Naspers Foundry, according to reports. The company will maintain its investments in nine portfolio companies, including SweepSouth and Planet42, but will no longer have a dedicated team focused on South African startups. A spokesperson for Naspers said the global investment environment had changed, and the firm needed to adapt its early-stage investment strategy. Naspers Foundry launched in 2019 to back South African start-ups in series A and B stages. It invested just half its $100m fund before shutting down.
