NTBTS TechNaija Hall of Fame 2023: Gbas, Gbos, and Glory
I am so happy writing this to you. I wish you all the great things you wish yourself.
Omo, the year is almost on mute, but before we slide into 2024, let’s take a minute to celebrate the tweets that shook, shocked, and entertained us most and maybe some lovey-dovey (not hating, but I wouldn’t say I like that part, haters will say I’m jealous). Sha grab your agbalumo abi coffee and gather round.
NTBTS TechNaija Hall of Fame
1. The Tweet From the Past: Well, this tweet aged well like fine agbani, proving some folks were ahead of the curve before the curve was even a thing. Let’s give it up for the OG with a consistent spirit.
Spoiler alert, it came to pass, but we are still finished, maybe not as a nation, though
E didn’t run, he was runned
Aboki FX said I’ll be here
2. Ezra Unbelievably Liquidity: Well, Ezra broke the internet 2022 with his TESLA custom name, this year it is unbelievably liquidity,
Lmao, I will buy shawarma or go to Idumota market and tell everyone to pick whatever they want.
I love this part.
3. The Master of Respectful Insults: We all know that Naija Twitter loves a good roast, but this year, someone mastered the art of throwing shade with respect. They delivered their disses with eloquence, wit, and a surprising lack of profanity (well, maybe just a sprinkle).
Haa
I give up
How can I forget this?
4. The Tweet that Lives Rent-Free in Our Heads: Remember that one tweet that just, like, WOAH?
This too
Last year, Burna Boy delayed fans from 6 pm and started performing at 3:30 am. Fans were not happy about the long wait, and there was no apology from the singer. He performed for just over an hour and later blamed technical issues for the delay. That was how he promised to invest in better infrastructure for future concerts and posted that he was looking for investors.
Just name it Surprise, surprize
I almost said sorry on the men’s behalf
You all should do better this year, sha
Lmaoo, everyone shock
5. Gen Z This, Gen Z That: Gen Alpha ain’t even here yet, and Gen Z is already catching strays.
Gen Z dey carry HR go where dem no know.
6. One Time Tech Bro Tried Politics: Throwback to when Tolu thought he could waltz into Alausa and ban Amala, the lifeblood of Lagos. Spoiler alert: he couldn’t.
7. The Tweets That Aged Like Milk: Remember when everyone thought this would end well? Yeah, us too. Warning, tweets may contain cringe-worthy levels of second-hand embarrassment. Proceed with caution.
These predictions were so off they need a GPS update (and a time machine)
A reminder that the internet never forgets, even when you desperately want it to.
We all hope, what is the exchange rate again?
Oh, oh
PS: I am not judging (okay, maybe a little). It's all about learning from the past and moving forward (without banning Amala, obviously).
Let's not forget the Tech Ship of the Year.
She came to visit my HR manager, and from there, she fell for the boy: Check out our first Rela Tech Ship series that crash the internet in the best way possible. 10/10 Rating?Tech’sLola and Henry said their love is a perfect score, even with room for improvement. (Just ask Henry about his Amala skills.)
How would I miss Adekunle and Damilola's love story? It's one of my favorite interviews. They prove that love can bloom even in the Nigeria’spected places (hello, Facebook messenger!). I didn't ask them to rate their love. The love story is a 10/10, no matter what the algorithm says!
We've all heard about women's experiences with Yoruba men, but unlike Femi and Yemi, the allegations surrounding Naija Tech bros have not been verified. So I took it upon myself to lead and uncover the truth. "If a FWB is not meeting your needs and is giving you more headaches than orgasms, then I think it's God's sign to move on. Cause a better person is always available. - Angel"
African Tech’s 2023 Recap
PiggyVest, a Nigerian digital savings company, recorded a monumental 2022, disbursing ₦400 billion ($519 million) to its users. This contributed to a total payout exceeding ₦1.1 triVASPs’($1.42 billion) since its 2016 launch.
Chowdeck, one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing on-demand online food and grocery delivery services, achieved a remarkable milestone. After 22 months of operations, the company celebrated on October 31, 2023, as it successfully delivered items worth over a billion Naira in a sinAfrica’sh, marking its highest achievement.
After a brief hiatus, Tech Nation, the UK’s Global Talent Visa endorsement organization, resumed operations, bringing renewed hope to aspiring Nigerian tech talents seeking international opportunities.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has eased restrictions on banks’ involvement in cryptocurrency transactions. While banks can now engage with virtual asset service providers (VASPs), stringent practices are in place, including the need for VASPs’ leaders to be licensed by the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC). The move comes after the CBN banned cryptocurrencies in 2021 but now aligns with the global trend of regulating VASPs. Nigeria’s crypto transaction volume grew 9% YoY to $56.7 billion between July 2022 and June 2023, maintaining its position as Africa’s largest market.
Bosun Tijani, the CEO of CcHUB, was appointed Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy.
So there you have it, folks, the NTBTS TechNaija Hall of Fame 2023. Remember, this is just a glimpse into the vibrant, hilarious, and occasionally messy world of Naija Tech Twitter. As we enter 2024, let's keep the gbas gboing, and the memes flowing. And who knows, maybe your tweet will be up on the Hall of Fame wall next year.
