Hello there, please tell us your name and what you do.
Tokunbo: My name is Tokunbo, I am a senior product designer.
Show us the way, please.
Tokunbo: Me too, I'm trying to find my way in this economy.
Oyin: My name is Oyin, I am a content creator/entrepreneur, and I sell thrift wears.
Ms Oyin, should I send my account number?
Oyin: You mean I should send mine?
Tokunbo: Don't mind her, she be big madam o.
Let's get to the real deal, so where and how did you guys meet?
Tokunbo: Lol, it's a funny story from my perspective. I've always been seeing her on one of my friend's Instagram.
Oyin: We met through a friend, and he couldn't resist a fine girl like me, so he decided to have me all to himself.
Tokunbo: Well, that's true. But she always tell me that she was in a serious relationship, so I didn't push it.
Oyin: You will not let me hear the last of this.
So when did you start dating? Who made the first move?
Tokunbo: We started dating in 2020, and I made the first move. That year, my friend posted her again, and I teased her by saying, 'You won't even connect me with this babe.' Then she asked if I was serious, and I said yes, and next thing she sent her number. I just stared at the number for a while, and I asked my friend to mention that she shared her number, there's no need for too much introduction. That's how I messaged her and said, 'Hi, my name is Tokunbo. I saw you on your friend's status and asked for your number. I'd like to be in a serious relationship with you. If you're looking for friendship, we can end this conversation here as I already have enough female friends. But if you also want something serious, we can continue this conversation.'
Oyin: Lol, when I saw that message, I couldn't help but smile. I just replied, 'Okay, we can continue talking.'
It's the confidence for me.
Tokunbo: It's not my fault, Lagos women have given me a hard time, so I didn't want to waste any time.
Oyin, were you surprised by the confidence? What was your reaction?
Oyin: I was. I immediately showed my friend, and we couldn't stop laughing. I liked the confidence though.
When was the first time you guys met in person?
Tokunbo: We met for the first time in November 2020. I did a surprise visit to her school at the time.
What was your first impression when you met each other?
Oyin: Impression? I don't even remember. When I saw him, I just jumped on him.
Tokunbo: I almost fell down. I was so tired.
Lmao, is the distance that far?
Tokunbo: Yes, from Ibadan to Malete in Kwara State. I asked my friend to book hotels and told her that someone was delivering a surprise gift for her. So as I was calling my friend for directions, she was talking to me as if I was a delivery rider.
Oyin: I was feeling a bit weird about the gift. I told him not to stress himself about delivering it, as I could pick it up whenever we met. But then my friend told me he had sent it, so I just accepted it. We were chatting until he arrived at the front of my room.
Men.
Tokunbo: It had to be done.
How long had you been dating before you finally decided to meet each other?
Tokunbo: It was about 2 months.
Oyin: Yeah, I think it was 2 months or more.
I have to say it, you guys have quite interesting stories to tell your grandkids. So, who is the better cook?
Tokunbo: Lol, she cooks better, and it's not even close. I've asked her to open a restaurant or start selling food many times.
It’s plenty.
Tokunbo: If she decides to cook just a small pot of stew, trust me, you'd lick your plate clean.
So when it comes to food, we should leave it for her.
Tokunbo: Yes, she's the one. She's my personal Hilda Baci.
Oyin, what would you say about his cooking?
Oyin: He cooks like a student. Whenever he cooks, he always tells me not to eat it. By student, I mean he makes things like jollof rice with just tomatoes and dry pepper. But he cooks efo riro well, at least 6 out of 10. But anything beyond that one and spaghetti, you’re on your own. His superpower, is making zobo. He's a Superman with zobo. In fact, since he made it for our neighbors, they always ask when he’s making another one.
Tokunbo: That zobo comes naturally. I used to make zobo for my family when I was still living with my parents, so I became good at it and improved it even more.
Awww. Now, who is more romantic?
Tokunbo: It is me ooo.
Oyin: I give you that one.
Lmaooo, what are your favorite activities that you enjoy together?
Oyin: Eating! We try out my new recipes together and watch Netflix. We also love going out to eat or trying new restaurants.
Tokunbo: Na me be her test subject for food, and she used to force me to watch Korean series. Now I’m an advocate.
Welcome to the club.
Tokunbo: Lol, no be all of them I like sha.
When did you know you were going to make this a forever thing?
Tokunbo: I’ve always known, to be honest. Since our first conversation, I just needed to make money, and I was waiting for her to be ready.
Oyin: Na so e Dey talk o.
Not that I didn’t think we were going to be together forever, I just wanted to get my money up too so I could spoil him.
Tokunbo: I like that.
What are some of the most memorable moments you have shared together?
Tokunbo: Hmm, we’ve had a lot. When we got our own place, when I got my car, when she got her mannequin for her business... We've had a lot, actually.
Oyin: We’ve had quite a few, to be honest. When I got my mannequin, that day was stressful, but I was really happy. When we got our own place, I got to decorate the kitchen the way I wanted. And, of course, when he asked me to marry him.
Aww, tell me about when he asked you to marry him.
Oyin: See, this man genuinely surprised me. He planned it with our friends. His friend's wife, who happens to also be my friend and a micro-influencer, told me she wanted to create content for a fashion brand and that she wanted to use me. That's how she picked out what I’d wear and told the makeup artist to come. Earlier that day, this man had told me that he was going to his brother’s side because his mom was there and wanted to see him. In fact, it was his brother that came to pick him up, and they left in the morning. Meanwhile, I was getting ready, sending him pictures on Snapchat, ashey everything was planned.
Lmaooo.
Tokunbo: See, that day was funny. I had wanted to do it a week earlier on my birthday, but logistics got in the way, so we moved it to that day. I told my friend's wife to come up with a story and send me the bill for everything they’d need. It was the only way to get her to wear makeup and get her nails done. She barely does any of these things normally.
Again, mennn. How has the marriage been so far?
Tokunbo: I mean, we still want to properly celebrate with a party. Our moms still want a party, but it’s been great so far.
Oyin: It’s been great! It's easier to plan some things for the future. But of course, our moms still want a big party, so maybe we'll do that after our 1-year anniversary.
Invite me ooo. So, can you tell me three things that you like or love about your partner?
Oyin: His dimples. The way he loves me. This man can do anything for me. He spoils me silly. He supports my business. He is just the absolute love of my life. I love him.
Tokunbo: They might not seem unique, but:
- I love how she pushes me to be better. See, I don't take life seriously, so every time I try to settle, her drive always inspires me to keep going.
- I love that she can cook, she don spoil me ehn,
- I love that she allows me to be me, and she supports everything I do.
She’s my best friend in the world.
I go love o. Now questions for you. Oyin, what is your partner's favorite food?
Oyin: His favorite food is yam and egg. He can eat it in his sleep.
Tokunbo, what is her favorite skincare product?
Tokunbo: Her favorite skincare product is her sunscreen. She always uses it.
There's this insider rumour in the tech space that techie people are promiscuous & that we don't do commitment. What do you guys think about it?
Oyin: Lol that was what I thought too.
Tokunbo: I think it’s a bad reputation, but tech people are mostly good people, mostly o.
E say nah mostly.
Tokunbo: Lol I can’t speak for everyone.
Have you ever woken up in the morning & watched your partner beauty sleep? What usually comes to your mind?
Tokunbo: Hehehe, I have done this because I Wake up early.
