They said Tech bros are ashawo, but I really don't know about that. Because mine is not.
Feyi, a product designer talks about her experience with dating Naija Tech bros.
Rela Tech ship: is a love story of tech couples by NTBTS where we delve into their relationships, situationships, and maybe some entanglements.
Hey, what's up? Can you tell us your name?
Feyi: I am Feyi.
What does your partner do? What do you do?
Feyi: He is a designer, and I am a designer too.
There is a saying that dating a 'Techbro' in Nigeria is 'shege.' What do you think about it?
Feyi: Yes, it is. Tell 'em about time and attention.
Lmaooo, how did you and your partner meet?
Feyi: We met on Instagram. I liked his works, commented, and liked every one of them since I wanted to get his attention. He slid into my DMs and boom!
Wow, so you were the one who gave him the green light?
Feyi: I wouldn't say green light, but hey!
Really??? He fell for it, right?
Feyi: Who wouldn't?
What attracted you to him?
Feyi: First, his designs, then the way he speaks. He's so eloquent.
How do you navigate lifestyle differences that arise in your relationship?
Feyi: Hmmm, that's a tough one. I would say he doesn't mind my lifestyle despite the fact that it is different from his.
What are some of the most memorable moments you have shared together?
Feyi: For me, I would say the day he surprisingly showed up at my convocation. It meant a lot.
Awww, how did you feel?
Feyi: I was wowed.
How do you support and inspire each other in your careers?
Feyi: He always encourages me to be a better designer since he has more experience in the field than I do.
Has being in a relationship with a Nigerian 'Techbro' influenced your own perspective or thoughts on them?
Feyi: Yes, actually. I used to think they were not into women.
Can you share any funny or heartwarming stories about your relationship?
Feyi: One time, we were supposed to see a movie at the cinema, and I arrived late, as usual. He was not having it because he had come from a farther location. Anyways, when I got there, he was already inside the cinema. I wasn't sure which room he was in, so I called him to come out. As soon as I saw him, I ran towards him and gave him a hug, saying I am sorry. Baba went from being angry to smiling like a child. So apparently, the fact that I ran towards him and gave him a hug dissolved his anger.
Are you in the same city? How often do you see each other?
Feyi: We see each other at least twice a month when we are in the same city, due to the distance. When we are not in the same city, it's once a month.
Can you share any special moments you have had together that made you feel truly loved and cherished?
Feyi: It was my cousin's wedding, a few days after my birthday. I had told him the venue of the wedding but I didn't invite him because he had not met the family, and I didn't think that was the right time or place. However, he showed up at the wedding and called me to come outside. I got there, and he was standing with a gift bag in his hand. I wasn't sure what to expect, but then he said he only came to drop this (handing the bag to me), saying, "Happy Birthday, my love." I didn't know what to say; I almost cried. But hey, I chased him off before any family member saw us together.
What are your favorite activities or date night ideas that you enjoy as partners?
Feyi: We both enjoy staying indoors and being at peace with each other, even though he would watch anime.
How do you support and encourage each other's personal growth within the relationship?
Feyi: We express love and affection through the five love languages, making time for each other and also by supporting our individual personal growth.
What are the five love languages?
Feyi: The five love languages are acts of service, quality time, words of affirmation, receiving gifts, and physical touch. We know each other's preferences, which helps us love each other more and make time for each other.
Can you share a particularly romantic or unforgettable date you went on together?
Feyi: I would say our first date. I mean, he laughed at every single thing I said, even though they weren't funny.
Lol. Has your partner ever surprised you with a heartfelt love letter or message?
Feyi: Yes. A birthday message.
How did it make you feel?
Brrrruuuuhhhhhh! I loved it!
Show us.
Feyi: Lol
