OpenAI Used Kenyan Workers on Less Than $2 Per Hour to Make ChatGPT Less Toxic.
ChatGPT, the powerful AI chatbot that can generate text on almost any topic or theme, was released in November 2022 and quickly gained recognition as one of the most impressive technological innovations of the year. Within a week of its release, it had attracted more than a million users. Its creator, OpenAI, is now in talks with investors to raise funds at a $29 billion valuation, including a potential $10 billion investment from Microsoft. This would make OpenAI, founded in 2015 with the goal of building superintelligent machines, one of the world's most valuable AI companies. However, according to a TIME investigation, in its efforts to make ChatGPT less toxic, OpenAI relied on outsourced Kenyan workers earning less than $2 per hour.
