The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) in Nigeria has approved the operation of 106 digital lenders within the country, with 65 receiving full approval and the remaining 41 receiving conditional approval. This comes after the introduction of a digital lending regulatory framework in August 2022 and FCCPC's efforts to crack down on predatory loan apps and protect consumer rights. Recently, the commission ordered six predatory loan operators to shut down and froze their bank accounts, and also instructed Apple and Google to remove their apps from their platforms. In addition, Google announced that effective January 2023, loan apps operating in Nigeria and Kenya will need to provide their operating license or be removed from the Google Playstore.
Nigeria's newest telecom operator, MAFAB Communications, has officially launched its 5G network services for the public, with launch ceremonies taking place in both Abuja and Lagos. The launch, which was under the new brand name Mcom, comes five months after MTN's own 5G launch in August 2022, with MAFAB having received a five-month extension for its rollout from the Nigerian Communications Commission.
